RE: Sharp convection/microwave metal shielding

I am also interested in what was wrong with your other unit. I have a R1870 with a shattered glass door. The glass is still sandwiched between the plastic laminate. We stopped using it as either a microwave or a convection even though it will still power up. Last weekend we were hooked up to a commercial generator (after I got some "bad" advice) and a power surge took out the microwave (unit won't come on..power at outlet still showing 110). Now I have to decide whether to replace or repair.

RE: Power surge problem?

Thanks for all the help.... I checked for the additional breakers and found the reset in the house battery compartment. Unfortunately it appears we have fried the TV's and microwave. Everything else is working as it should. I did talk to one of the others in our group...he confirmed that the 30a at the junction box is 240 not the 120 I was told. I guess the "electronic upgrade" schedule is going to be moved up a bit. Actually, went to Wally World yesterday and bought a 26" flat panel. Now I have to figure out how I am going to mount it into the cabinet up front.

RE: Power surge problem?

The 30a twist lock came from a local RV Trailer Supply. I have already returned it, but I'm pretty sure it said 30a 120v. I didn't think about checking the GFI's in the bathroom. I'll do that as soon as I'm back on the island.

RE: Power surge problem?

Thanks for the information. I will check the plugs as soon as I run home for my tester. If I lost the TV's & microwave....what are the chances I burned something else? I am hooked in again only this time at 15a. So far all lights, air cond. units (x2...one at a time) and refrigerator seem to be working. Should I be looking for anything in the house system? Tenn Stud - I'm willing to bet the rest of the group isn't aware of 240 from the genset. Thanks!

Power surge problem?

We are at the Thunder Boat races in San Diego. This year one of the others in our group arranged for a commercial generator to be dropped off. There are several junction boxes with 15a & 30a service. Our rig uses 50a.....so I bought a 30a twist lock pig tail and connected everything up. Tested the power by turning on one our air conditioners. A few minutes later there was an electrical odor inside the rig. I disconnected the power and checked everything. Now front and rear TV's and microwave will not turn on. All the fuses and breakers are good, didn't notice anything tripped. Everything else is working fine. One of our group said the TV's and microwave probably fried because of a power surge? Anyone else experienced something similar? Do TV's/microwaves have separate fuses? or should I plan a trip to Best Buy?

RE: Cool Tech question

Pull the M1 fuse as well as the IOD fuse and you'll be set to go. We just finished a 5100 mile trip pulling our '08 Wrangler without a problem. I also have the Cool Tech harness.

RE: Day - Night Shades in Discovery

Are you sure the string/cord broke? On a recent trip I noticed the string had let loose from the lower corner of one of our bedroom blinds. While trying to figure out where I could go to fix it......I popped off the retaining piece on the corner and found that the knot had come loose and the string was inside the bottom runner. I was able to pull the string out...reattach to the corner piece and put it all back together. It is still working!!! The worst that will happen is you'll have to send it out anyway.

Convection Oven Door Replacement

In our '05 Safari Simba we have a Sharp mdl R-1870 convection/microwave oven. Total hours on the combo is probably less than 10 hrs (we were just figuring out how to adjust cooking times for the convection). After a day of traveling west on Hwy 2 in Minnesota (some pretty rough roads), we were camped and oven baking. The interior glass on the door shattered. The outer door glass is still intact, however the interior glass is being held in place by what appears to be plastic film (which I am guessing is part of the safety glass). A small corner of the foil cover on the baking pan may have been touching the glass (I only say "may have" because I can't find any other possible cause). Has anyone ever experienced this before? If you have....is the door "user" replaceable or do I need to send it to a "qualified technician"? Thanks in advance for the help. This site has been a source of great help!

RE: Best place to Buy Roadmaster Stowaway

I found what I needed on Craigs List. It took me several weeks of checking, but I eventually found a "gently used" tow bar and base plate at an excellent price. I did see a few stowaways, but didn't give them much thought at the time......sure wish I had!

RE: How did you end up with your Class A?

I grew up (in a family of 5) with a 20' Minnie Winnie class c. No air,tv, microwave or generator. We had a bunch of great times and built a lot of memories. My family and I (only 3 of us) jumped into a 33' Safari class a... 2 a/c, 2 TV's, microwave...etc. During our So. Calif. wildfires of '03, we decided that having a m/h was a good idea for such emergencies and what a great way to travel and see the U.S. We are now building our memories and will be off on a 4500 mile trip next week.

RE: Grand Canyon

We stayed at Trailer Village a few years ago...we made our approach from the east side of the canyon. We were there in July and got in without reservations.....even got a second night (Friday) by asking. Tram was just outside the entrance and took you around the south rim. Great time and we'll go back again.

RE: South Dakota and Wyoming suggestions

Here is another vote for Rafter J in Hill City. We had a great time visiting the area and seeing the sites. When we visited Yellowstone we stayed at Grizzly RV Park, which is outside the west entrance. Easy walking distance into town. Plenty of shopping and dining opportunities.

RE: Trip Planning Services

If you are talking about planning your driving distance for each day try the Good Sam web site. We are in the midst of planning a trip from California to the East Coast and just purchased Microsofts Streets and Trips. Haven't used it enough to give an opinion yet.....but have heard alot of good things about it.

RE: "UPDATE" Brake Buddy Vantage Select

Thanks for the posting. I am also trying to make up my mind on which system to get. I have narrowed it down to either the Brake Buddy Classic or the Vantage. If you don't mind my asking.....who did you order yours from and were you happy with the order process? How long did it take to install the break away? Were the instructions detailed enough? Thanks for the great info!

Wrangler Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness

I am setting up our '08 Wrangler to tow behind our class A motorhome. After researching brake buddys, tow bars and other things.....I have a question about the wiring harness. Has anyone used the Mopar harness (part # 82211156)? Any problems doing a self install? Anyone else use another harness (Cool Tech) or others? Thanks in advance for the help!

RE: Brakemaster 9000

**Update** Roadmaster does sell either a replacement compressor or a "second motorhome kit" that includes a compressor, air line and switches. Now I have to make the hard choice about buying the kit or for approx. $100 more a Brake Buddy or equivalent.

RE: Brakemaster 9000

I have a Safari Simba (gas)...no air compressor on board. I have an e-mail off to Roadmaster asking about a replacement compressor. My shop told me that they don't think the compressor is sold separate from a kit. By the time I buy a new kit and have it installed.....it would be more cost effective for me to get a Brakemaster 9400 or 9700 instead.

Brakemaster 9000

I bought a Sterling Tow Bar and most of the parts for a Brakemaster 9000 off of Craigslist. The tow bar is in excellent shape (used only twice). The Brakemaster seems to be in good shape (I have the air cylinder, breakaway and some of the relays), however the compressor was left in the former owner's rig when he sold it. Anyone know where I can get just the compressor? I am also missing some air lines, but the shop that is going to do the work says they can replace those.

RE: Garmin c330 GPS

I've had my 330 for about 22 months now and have been happy with its performance and features. I did have the power cord to the windshield mount fray and it stopped charging my unit. I replaced it with a "genuine" Garmin window mount from Amazon. Now it works on the windshield mount, but not off it. I searched the internet and it sounds like it is most likely the battery. I e-mailed Garmin and they would be happy to replace the battery for a flat repair fee of $225! Since the repair fee and +/- $75 will get me a new unit, I will most likely just use it while traveling in our motorhome and buy a new one for our family cars.
